art as a form of communication

Identity

I see design as a feature involved with a concept that “works” for someone. But of course, no design can be universal, even though it may be effective for 99.9999999999% of individuals. I believe there is no perfection. And to strive for absolute perfection is greedy and inorganic.

My vision is to create things that recipients can connect with on a personal level. I want to design products that evolve with their humans over time to create a much deeper personal connection, which would in turn invite them to change it, misuse it, create and attach different meanings and functions to it. Essentially, I want to turn people into their own designers, in the hopes of invoking feelings design has given me.

Liking to turn things inside out with metaphors and with real life examples (due to being a DIY fan of especially electronics) I started to incline towards certain materials that aid and invite people to be curious of how their things work. An example to this is choosing to include transparent materials as I like designs to be honest and transparent in themselves. It also shows that whenever something goes wrong, it becomes easier to diagnose by simply looking, instead of a designed item being an unwelcoming black box of mysteries. An influence that helped me realize this passion was how older electronic products usually came with their repair manuals right in the box, when things were simpler and access to services was more challenging. Things were set up for the average person to own the product they bought. I want to bring this approach back within my designs, even though it might not be the most economically viable thing to do in the perspective of large companies.

I think in the future, as everything starts automating themselves and become more complicated, our passions and cognitive efforts to understand the world around us will be the main leverage to move the society further. And I want my designs to be advocating for that vision of the future instead of the dystopic sci fi future we all have seen in movies.

Vision

Design is mainly a method of building the future. I see being a designer as one of the only professions that could never be replaced by the increasing abilities of artificial intelligence and computing power. Engineering could be automated to be better if every rule could be simulated, medical operations could be performed if the machines were taught every single emergency protocol that went wrong. And the machines would simply be more capable in cases that only require applying precise skills. But design is not like that. Design is to envision beyond what the machines could operate.

Now that my thoughts for the utopic (or dystopic depending on your point of view) future is out of the way, let's talk about how that reflects to my vision.

I tend to stay within my own bubble while designing. It is important to learn from the past in design. But to go beyond, you look at the other direction. I always considered myself a misfit with the methods I use to complete tasks. That has got to be my legacy. That being a misfit is a gift, not a burden. Design is a form of expression. That’s why there are so many ways to achieve a certain result. I find design must reflect a piece of the user. Design should be relatable; it should connect to the user. Personally, I enjoy visible functionality and minimalism and I want to design for people that need that input to relate to design.

I want streamlined design to be not boring. I want people to express their identities throughout the things they own and how they function. I want to work with a whole new personal level of design for people. In short, I want to design things that I feel like I need them in my life. Because as humanity progresses, the main quality differing us will be our identities. And we should be able to freely show it to every extent.

I would love to tell you that I want to design X in terms of Y but unfortunately asides from my vision towards the future above, I don’t have a specific medium I want to design in (yet).
